Maximising Space – A Complete Garden Transformation.

The owners of this Kimberley property wanted to transform a cluttered and unused garden into a stylish, modern practical outdoor space. One that they could enjoy and entertain. With a relatively small garden with a significant upward slope, the challenge was to create more usable space without making the garden feel enclosed. They turned to Cassey Landscapes to bring our experience ,expertise and ideas to the project. With over 30 years of experience in landscaping, we carefully considered every aspect of the garden — from the layout and levels to the paving, retaining walls, steps and safety features.

MAXIMISING SPACE

The main objective was to create a garden that felt larger, more open and much more suitable for entertaining.

To achieve this, we moved the retaining walls back, increasing the area of the lower terrace. The existing steps were also simplified and made wider, which not only improved access between the levels but helped create a greater sense of space.

This opened up the opportunity to create a safer upper terrace, complete with a bespoke bar area — perfect for the garden parties and entertaining the owners had in mind.

The result was a garden with two distinct entertaining areas, each offering its own character and purpose.

Glass Balustrade

Safety was an important consideration throughout the project, particularly because of the changes in levels.

After careful planning, we chose a glass balustrade as the ideal solution. It provided the necessary safety barrier while maintaining the open feel of the garden.

The glass also complemented the clean, modern appearance of the grey porcelain paving and the sleek details, allowing the different materials to work together rather than making the garden feel visually crowded.

Rendered Retaining Walls

One of the challenges was increasing the height and length of the retaining walls without allowing them to dominate the paved areas.

Careful consideration was given to the positioning, proportions and finish of the walls so that they appeared to sit further away than they actually were. This helped maintain the clean, open outlook that the owners wanted.

A silver-grey flat silicone render was applied to the concrete block retaining walls. The light, contemporary finish helped reflect light around the garden and created the impression of a larger, more open space. Combined with the grey porcelain paving, the rendered walls created a sleek and cohesive finish throughout the garden.

A Garden to Love for Years to Come

The completed project has completely transformed this Kimberley property, creating substantial additional entertaining space across two levels.

The upper terrace, with its bespoke bar area, provides the perfect setting for entertaining friends and family, while the lower patio offers a more relaxed and laid-back space to sit and enjoy the garden.
